Blog Assignment # 7

I have read an essay from the “Arak Anthology” on page 49, which talks about the “Book Banning in the United States”. The author talks in both voices about the banning books. On one side, she talked about the disadvantage of books, which is it will limit people to come up new ideas; however, the advantage of books is also mentioned in the paper.

The author’s claim is that books should be banned in some case because in many American schools, books begin to limit children’s opportunities to explore new ideas and they cannot even expand their knowledge. She used many examples in history to support her claim. Firstly, she mentioned the first banning of books in the United States was in 1650. After that activity, people were not able to follow book writers’ experience. Then, in 1873, there was a Civil War founded the New York Society for the Prevention of Vice, it changed a lot about the role of books. And hundred years later, the same thing happened again in the United States. Based on all the facts in history, the writer concluded her claim.

In fact, this is a very persuasive essay because the claim and the thesis is pretty clear. And the author expressed her claim very well because the support she used is very strong to prove her ideas. And the use of quotation is pretty good and useful for her essay.

Blog Assignment # 6

I have read “The John and Frieda Arak Anthology” on page 57, which is the article named “Youth Voting” written by Jeffrey Bivin. In the article, there are lots of quotations and paraphrases.

The one quotation is expressed in this way: “Less knowledgeable about the substance or processes of politics. Only one in 10 young Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 can name both of their senators compared with one in five of those between the ages of 30 and 45”. This is a very good support for the whole paragraph which talks about the comparison of civil knowledge and participation between the youth and the older citizens. The author uses this quotation which is a very useful and true data to support his main idea of the fourth paragraph.

The one paraphrase that appears in this article is “the first major outlet for creating more opportunities for involvement, which is extensively addressed by Deli Carpini, is the internet. He reports that as of the year 2000, 55% of Americans have internet access and a third of those Americans use it more than five hours a week.” This paraphrase shows some useful and important information which could express the fact, which is that the most common way for the teenagers to know the political information is the internet, and the internet is more and more convenient so that more and more youth could easily know the news. This useful data could help a lot to this paragraph to express the main idea, which is “It is equally important to create more and better opportunities for the youth.”

Therefore, the quotations and paraphrases are both useful and important to be used in a good research paper or academic articles.

In history, there were many wars and definitely the wars would produce winners and losers. In different sides, opinions would have extremely differences. The winners would enjoy the happiness of winning while the losers would be sad or depress after wars.
Also, the writers’ opinions of writing the history will be different. For instance, in the World War II, China is one of the victorious nations and Japan is the loser of this war. In Chinese history book, we have a big part to describe the facts that happened during those 8 years. Also, the book will explain how difficulties that our army met and how we overcame those barriers. I have read many books about the war between China and Japan. In Chinese writers’ words, they always express the great that Chinese people are during the war. However, Japanese books don’t have many contents which talk about that part in history because they have the loser’s opinion.
Secondly, the losers’ opinions are always opposite to the winners. However, the only same description that the winners and losers will write in same opinions is the facts that happen during the war. For example, in the war between China and Japan, both of the writers, who are from these two different countries, talk about what the weapons they owned at that time and how many people they had in their army. Also, they will talk about who wins or loses finally.
Therefore, different satiations will express the opinions in different ways. Also, different writers from different countries will express different opinions about the same war.

Blog Assignment 4

Recently, there are more and more international students coming to the United States to study. And they will meet all kinds of problems during the days in which they are studying in the US. In the reading material, the author’s main problem is that he cannot communicate with American students and he also has less communication with Chinese students. From my perspective, even though Liu wants to practice his English, avoiding talking in Chinese is not a good idea. Actually, no matter how independent you are, you should have some friends who can help you when you meet problems. And as an international student, the people who are from your own country are the best choice because they can understand you easily without language and culture problems.
As I am an international student, I can easily understand Liu’s situation and mood. Because of the different culture, the class style in the US is quite different then from in China. Therefore, Chinese students may not adjust to the style of the class immediately. To solve this problem, international students should communicate with students who come from your own country frequently in order to reduce some pressure and understand some American culture more easily.
Communication is very important for international students because it will reduce the possibility of feeling lonely and homesick. Originally if you have trouble making American friends, you can initially choose a group of Chinese friends to familiarize yourself with the area better. Try to figure out each problem one by one, then you will become more successful in your academic study.

Because of different cultures, different countries have their own rules of using gestures, eye contact, and body space. There are lots of difference between my country and the United States of using these rules. Firstly, using gestures in the USA is quite common when people are making a conversation. However, even though we use some kinds of gestures, we don’t use those as usual as American do. What is more, the eye contact is pretty important in both American and Chinese communication. When people focus on eye contact, it is not only showing the respects, but also helps a lot to make their speech or conversation more clearly. For instance, professors always use eye contact when they are presenting some new lessons or ideas. It makes easier for their audience to understand. Last but not least, you should have a body space when you are talking with someone. This rule between China and America is quite different. American style prefers to less space when they are talking while Chinese people would like to leave more space. In the United States, people talks without leaving a big space because they want to make communication relax and show their friendly. However, getting a little distance for Chinese means respect. Therefore, different cultures make different rules of communication.

Option 2

Some experts and academicians consider that different cultures play different roles in determining how much of people’s private selves they will show in public. And the study also shows that the first four minutes of expression are pretty important to make a friend or not in the future.

In my country, China, people feel shy to communicate with others for the first time in tradition. They do not kiss each other for the first time and do not show the enthusiasm to a stranger because they think that action is not polite for the first time meeting. Moreover, they also hide their emotions in order to make the first time expression of themselves implicitly because they do think the one who has an inturned character is mature and they do not think the one who has few words are hard going. Therefore, people do not have the custom of showing their emotions immediately.

However, people’s opinions are changing recently. They are demonstrative of their affection for others in public nowadays. For example, businessmen hold hands to show the honest and friendly to their cooperation partners. Also, friends use a hug to show the close friendship even though they do not kiss each others as Spanish do. In conclusion, the first time expression is very important and it may decide your succeed or not in career and life. Therefore, to choose a feat way to make first expression is useful and necessary.

The writer, Amy Tan, mainly uses some examples of her mother to talk about the language problems among different people because of the habit of using language. From my perspective, different generations have different use of language. Also, people use different forms of language in different occasions.
As grammar and vocabulary are changing all the time, different generations have their different types of using language. For example, people use “Good-bye” in old time, but they use “Have a good day” instead of the simple word now. It is obvious that words are changing and the new fashionable speech is coming out quickly. Therefore, it is the main reason for the difference of using language in different ages and generations.
Moreover, the importance that people use language in formal situations is the correct grammar. In less formal situations, almost people do not care about their grammar and speak out what they are thinking immediately; however, when people are doing a speech or speaking in public, they have to focus on not only the content but also the grammar in order to make all their audiences understand easily. And that problem often happens to a beginner who is studying a new language because the first part in their language study is how to write. For instance, I have a Korean friend who is studying Chinese for 4 years. His academic writing is good and his presentation is perfect as well because he studied a lot about the formal grammar during the past 4 years. However, in daily life, when we use Chinese to communicate, there are lots of problems for him to understand me because I do use slang and I don’t care about my grammar very much.
Language is a magic thing that could make a same meaning in different ways. Therefore, people have to try their best to understand or explain some words to their different generations.
