Blog Assignment # 6

I have read “The John and Frieda Arak Anthology” on page 57, which is the article named “Youth Voting” written by Jeffrey Bivin. In the article, there are lots of quotations and paraphrases.

The one quotation is expressed in this way: “Less knowledgeable about the substance or processes of politics. Only one in 10 young Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 can name both of their senators compared with one in five of those between the ages of 30 and 45”. This is a very good support for the whole paragraph which talks about the comparison of civil knowledge and participation between the youth and the older citizens. The author uses this quotation which is a very useful and true data to support his main idea of the fourth paragraph.

The one paraphrase that appears in this article is “the first major outlet for creating more opportunities for involvement, which is extensively addressed by Deli Carpini, is the internet. He reports that as of the year 2000, 55% of Americans have internet access and a third of those Americans use it more than five hours a week.” This paraphrase shows some useful and important information which could express the fact, which is that the most common way for the teenagers to know the political information is the internet, and the internet is more and more convenient so that more and more youth could easily know the news. This useful data could help a lot to this paragraph to express the main idea, which is “It is equally important to create more and better opportunities for the youth.”

Therefore, the quotations and paraphrases are both useful and important to be used in a good research paper or academic articles.
