The writer, Amy Tan, mainly uses some examples of her mother to talk about the language problems among different people because of the habit of using language. From my perspective, different generations have different use of language. Also, people use different forms of language in different occasions.
As grammar and vocabulary are changing all the time, different generations have their different types of using language. For example, people use “Good-bye” in old time, but they use “Have a good day” instead of the simple word now. It is obvious that words are changing and the new fashionable speech is coming out quickly. Therefore, it is the main reason for the difference of using language in different ages and generations.
Moreover, the importance that people use language in formal situations is the correct grammar. In less formal situations, almost people do not care about their grammar and speak out what they are thinking immediately; however, when people are doing a speech or speaking in public, they have to focus on not only the content but also the grammar in order to make all their audiences understand easily. And that problem often happens to a beginner who is studying a new language because the first part in their language study is how to write. For instance, I have a Korean friend who is studying Chinese for 4 years. His academic writing is good and his presentation is perfect as well because he studied a lot about the formal grammar during the past 4 years. However, in daily life, when we use Chinese to communicate, there are lots of problems for him to understand me because I do use slang and I don’t care about my grammar very much.
Language is a magic thing that could make a same meaning in different ways. Therefore, people have to try their best to understand or explain some words to their different generations.
